In addition to their long time in Megadeth together, Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson have something else in common: they’ve both been fired from bands. According to Ellefson, though, he’s handled his dismissal a lot better than his ex-bandmate.
Ellefson was dropped from Megadeth in 2021 after a sexually explicit video of the bassist surfaced online. In an interview with the Heavy Talk YouTube channel, Ellefson says he’s “move[d] on” with his life post-Megadeth, something he doesn’t feel Mustaine has done since his infamous firing from Metallica in 1983.
“I’ve watched how [Mustaine’s] treated his dismissal from Metallica, still b******* about it 40 years later, and I think it looks f****** pathetic,” Ellefson says. “‘It’s, like, ‘You know what? Fix your s*** and move on.’ That’s how I’ve chosen to deal with it: fix your s*** and move on.”
Since his departure from Megadeth, Ellefson’s released music with a number of bands, including Dieth, The Lucid, Kings of Thrash and Ellefson-Soto.
“I put out four records in the time the last f****** Megadeth record came out,” Ellefson shares. “I think every one of them are as good or better than the latest Megadeth record.”
Megadeth released their latest album, The Sick, the Dying..and the Dead!, last September. Mustaine last commented on Metallica in a Guitar World article published in February, in which he suggested that the “Enter Sandman” outfit was “afraid” of playing a joint show or tour with Megadeth.
